John Collins reflects on a year at Almondvale

John Collins hopes he has left a lasting legacy at Livingston FC and has wished the club well in the future.

The club’s director of football quit last week, 13 months after first joining.

Since his arrival, the club has been transformed into a club focused on playing ‘total football’, and developing talented young footballers.

The club has also attracted plenty of interest around the country and beyond, with scouts targetting some Livi players, while others have been called up to Scotland youth squads.

And as he looks back on the club he devoted a year of his life to, he admits he’s proud of the achievements.

Collins told Courier Sport: “It’s been an exciting year with lots of change.

“The foundations are now in place to allow the club to grow.

“Every team from the under-13s right up to the first team have impressed.

“The caoches at every level deserve a pat on the back for that.

“We haven’t won any leagues or any trophies, but we’ve won admiration.”

Collins sensationally stepped in as director of football at Livingston last February, appointing John Hughes as his manager.

The former Celtic and Hibs duo promised to bring a new philosophy to Almondvale which would focus on professionalism off the park and a slick, attractive, passing style on the pitch.

There was also to be a renewed focus on developing young players.

And the ex-Scotland and Monaco midfielder reckons that’s exactly what has been delivered.

He said: “It was a fantastic year.

“We said from day one what we wanted on the training pitch and what we wanted from the players.

“We want to try to get them playing total football.

“I am very proud because we did it very quickly.

“That’s me and all the coaches.

“Everyone has done a terrific job - that’s been the pleasing thing.

“Everywhere we go, opposition teams and their boards say how well the young players are doing, and that’s been pleasing.

“The fans have been fantastic with me and the players.

“I would have liked more in the stadium, but it takes time to do that.

“I wish them and the club well.”
