John Collins has revealed he was “astounded” that Livingston’s board of directors decided to axe boss Gareth Evans.

The manager was bulleted on Thursday, with director of football Collins quitting in protest.

Speaking exclusively to Courier Sport, the former Scotland star said: “I was astounded and disappointed.

“In a meeting with Ged Nixon and Gordon McDougall beforehand they said they wanted to remove Gareth.

“I told them I thought it was the wrong decision, and the results and performances speak for themselves.

“Gareth is a young manager learning his trade, with huge boots to fill and he filled them seamlessly.

“He has been fantastic. But the directors wanted Gareth removed. They didn’t think he was doing a good job and I disagreed 100 per cent.”

Collins backed Evans to step up as manager when John Hughes left to take over at Hartlepool in November.

The switch in bosses showed no negative effects on the pitch with Livi racking up a string of strong results.

But behind the scenes there were clearly tensions.

After Evans was sacked, the board released a statement stating that: “We voiced our concern over the stewardship of the club under Gareth, despite the results being generally acceptable.

“John Collins, having appointed Gareth to the post despite certain reservations, has regrettably decided to tender his resignation following our decision to relieve Gareth of his duties.”

Head of youth development Richie Burke will act as caretaker while a new manager is sought.
